  Habitat House

CLE Enrichment Series

For one week in August, 2010, CLE students from sites all over the country joined together to participate in the Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge, volunteering their time and labor in Georgetown, South Carolina.

Accompanied by CLE staff, students:
  • participated in the framing and construction of a new home;
  • volunteered in the Habitat Store;
  • resided in the Habitat volunteer house;
  • planned and prepared their own meals, including an elaborate production of a regional favorite - Frogmore Stew;
  • maintained personal routines;
  • completed household tasks;
  • and toured many of the attractions of Charleston, Myrtle Beach and Georgetown County, including:
    • Huntington State Park Beach
    • The Carolina Opry
    • Boone Hall Plantation
    • Ft. Sumter
    • Historic Charleston City Market
    • Broadway at the Beach, and much more
Students learned about the history, structure and function of Habitat for Humanity, developed new skills, added experience to their resumes, and built relationships while:
  • living  and traveling together;
  • improving the lives of others;
  • exploring new landscapes;
  • working with others toward a common purpose

The team did an outstanding job of keeping their busy schedules, adapting to a new environment (physical, cultural, and culinary), supporting each other, participating in new activities, and working together to build a home that will greatly enhance the lives of a local family. We are exceedingly proud of our CLE Serves volunteers and their service to the community of Georgetown, SC.
