CLE Summer Program 2012 Now Enrolling!
College
Living Experience (CLE) Summer Exploration will be held at CLE in
Denver Sunday, June 24 through Saturday, July 14, 2012.
About CLE Summer Exploration
CLE Summer Exploration is a program for diverse learners that offers a
preview of independent living in a college environment, with intensive
support to build the educational, vocational, social and independent
living skills needed for transition to adulthood.
During this
three-week summer experience, students with various learning
exceptionalities follow a schedule and participate in classes to prepare
them for life after high school. In addition, students are introduced
to living on their own and will practice self advocacy on campus and in
the community. CLE Summer Exploration is open to students entering
their senior year of high school, or who have recently graduated.

SOCIAL PROGRAMMING
CLE Summer Exploration includes structured social activities,
supervised by CLE staff, which help students develop their social skills
and make fulfilling and appropriate friendships with peers and adults.
Mentors and instructors facilitate opportunities for students to put
their social skills into practice in order to make new friends and gain
self-confidence. In addition to recreational activities in the Denver
metropolitan area, students spend one full day of the program at the
Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center in spectacular Summit County, one
of the world’s premier mountain destinations.
LIVING
During
Summer Exploration, students enhance their independent living skills by
sharing a dorm suite with one other student. Each student has their own
bedroom and bathroom, and shares a common living area. They also attend
cooking classes and prepare a few of their own meals, keep
their apartment clean, and do their own laundry with assistance from CLE
staff.
FAQs
Do I have to live in Denver to attend the summer program?
Students travel from around the world to attend College Living
Experience. Traveling to Denver is the first time many of our students
have traveled by themselves and is an incredible learning experience.
Students from over thirty different states have had a chance to attend
the summer program during the four years it has been offered.
What is the age of the students who attend the program?
The average age of students attending the summer program is 18, with a
range of 17-20. The CLE Summer Exploration program is open to students
entering their senior year of high school, or who have recently
graduated.
What paperwork do I need to submit to apply?
All applicants are required to submit and application, letter of
recommendation, current psycho-educational evaluation and other relevant
information about their educational needs which may include an IEP, 504
plan, behavior intervention plan or reports from other physicians or
related service providers. The entire application process is outlined
below.
What are the qualifications of the staff members?
College Living Experience is able to provide comprehensive support to
students attending summer programming because of its highly qualified
staff. Staff supporting the students have a Masters or Bachelors degree
in education or a related field and receive regular training on best
practices for working with individuals with disabilities. Prior to the
students’ arrival, staff receive a complete profile of all students to
ensure they learn about how to support the individual needs of each
student attending. Staff are available 24/7 to assist students and a
high staff to student ratio is in place to ensure everyone receives
ongoing instruction and support in a safe environment.
Where do students live?
Students have a unique opportunity to live in dormitories, which are down the street from the Auraria Higher Education Center.
Each student will have his or her own bedroom and bathroom and share a
common living space with a roommate. A Resident Advisor stays at the
dorms and is available to students at all times. The dormitories have an
on-site fitness center, laundry facilities, coffee shop, and ATM. Use
of computers is limited and Internet access is available for student use
in the dorm.
Do I need extra spending money for activities?
We recommend students to have $50 per week spending money for any
additional recreational activities they may want to participate in,
snacks and souvenirs.
