Why did you go into teaching/tutoring?
I chose a career in education for civic, personal and spiritual reasons. When I started teaching, it became immediately evident to me that one curriculum and one approach does not fit all students. Possessing the knowledge that not only can all people learn, they do learn, I was motivated from the beginning to find ways to fully support the learning of all my students. Strategies to differentiate curriculum and individualize instruction became a focus in my teaching so I might better support student growth, both academically and personally. The move to adult education helped me further refine these approaches. Watching students excel rapidly through customized educational plans convinced me of the capabilities of this model. One of the most compelling results I have observed is how empowered students become as they learn to identify and understand their unique strengths and challenges, and recognize their capabilities. Supporting learners who had previously been unsuccessful in educational settings continues to be as much a transformational process for me as it is for the students I work with. Individual tutoring is an absolute joy. The opportunity to focus on one student’s particular needs, talents and goals is the optimal teaching situation.
Why did you choose special education?
Students with special educational needs, like so many other populations I’ve worked with, often struggle with experiencing success in traditional settings, and too often develop a sense of inadequacy about their abilities in school and in life. Being a part of turning this around is one of the most exciting and fulfilling experiences I’ve ever had, and has become a professional passion.
What keeps you motivated?
The students—their unique stories, their distinct talents, their courage, their triumphs, and the constant challenge to help them navigate obstacles.
What is your favorite thing about working at CLE?
Since I only get to pick one, I’ll say “the people”—our staff of phenomenally talented, committed professionals, the eclectic and fascinating group of students, and corporate guidance that doesn’t feel corporate.
